A functional element in the shape of an arm 1 comprises a rigid framework 22 joining two flanges 7, 8, between which there are placed two spindle-shaped envelopes 2, 3 which can be inflated with an adjustable pressure, one of the ends 5a, 5b of the envelopes being fixedly mounted on the flange 7 provided with a means 10 for introducing pressurised fluid and means 9 for guiding cables, the other of the free ends 6a, 6b constitutes free attachment points connected by cables 15, 16 to a movable clevis 31 of a second functional element 30 articulated about the pin 17. Any increase in fluid pressure in an envelope gives rise to a shortening of its length, thus releasing a useful travel converted into mechanical energy. Application for manipulation and locomotion in areas where there are risks of pollution, irradiation and explosion and in the field of assisting people with handicapped limbs. IMAGE
