Package for preserving perishable foodstuffs comprises (a) a support impregnated with a mixt. of a fumigant (I) generating a bactericidal gas (esp. SO2), a retardant (II) for retarding the release of the gas, and opt. additives (III) capable of supplying elements essential for the metabolism of the foodstuff; (b) a plastics film which is permeable to gases and water vapour and which completely envelops the support and separates it from the foodstuff, which is placed directly on the film; and (c) an opt. perforated wrapping material which is permeable to gases but not to water vapour and which completely envelops components (a) and (b). The package can be used for fresh fruit and vegetables, mushrooms raw meat and poultry, and sea food. The wrapping material maintains a humid atmos. around the food while the plastics film prevents direct contact between the food and the preservative materials.
