The process for the production of a semi-precious-stone-like hard material which can be cut, split, ground and polished, is distinguished in that a binder is mixed to a pasty consistency with a filler and a base pigment, the pasty material is divided into pieces at least once, and the pieces are coated at least once with an additional pigment and compressed again. A reinforcement such as glass fibres or carbon fibres can be added to this base material. The material can be brought into the desired shape by pressing and then calcined, sintered or hardened.
