For the purpose of facilitating the start-up process of a double strip continuous casting mould by lowering the static pressure prevailing in the mould space, and for the purpose of inducing uniformity of the superheating of the steel melt introduced into the mould space, a process for the supply of steel melt from a tundish into a double strip continuous casting mould is proposed, in which only at the beginning of casting, i.e. during a short period after the initiation of the casting process, a lower filling level is set, via the rate of flow from a main chamber of the tundish in an auxiliary chamber from which the steel melt passes into the mould space, than in the main chamber. The tundish 1 suitable for the performance of the supply process according to the invention is equipped with a main chamber 5 and an auxiliary chamber 6 from which the casting nozzle 13 leaves, the said chambers being connected together by an intermediate channel 7; the capacity of the main chamber 5 is at least twice as large as that of the auxiliary chamber 6. Both channels, i.e. the intermediate channel 7 arranged in the vicinity of the main chamber 5 and the bottom outlet channel 9 arranged in the region of the auxiliary chamber 6, have a shut-off plug 16' and 17' respectively, by means of which the throughflow cross-section of the channel concerned can be changed.
