@ A mobile liquid phase including an ion exchange site-forming compound is directed through a porous hydrophobic chromatographic separation medium without permanently attached ion exchange sites. Such compounds include a hydrophobic counter-ion opposite in charge to the ionic species to be separated, which form reversible adsorptive bonds with the chromotographic medium. The effluent from the chromatographic medium is contacted with a membrane separating a compartment for the effluent and one for a regenerant. The membrane includes exchangeable ions capable of converting the co-ions of the ion exchange site forming compound to weakly ionized form. The ionic species are detected, suitably by a conductivity detector.
