The piston (13) of a rotary pump or internal combustion engine rotates inside a cylinder (10) fitted with end covers (11). A circular groove concentric with its axis of rotation is formed in the end face of the piston at its outer edge. The groove is of triangular cross-section and receives a two part sealing ring (42) together with a spring ring (43). The spring ring (42) is inserted between the inclined outer surface of the groove and the sloping surface of the sealing ring. The spring ring (42) is thus able to press the sealing ring axially against the surface of the end cover (11) and radially inward against the inner surface of the triangular groove.
