The novel synergistic active substance combinations consisting of (1) a photosynthesis-inhibiting active substance (herbicide) and (2) an azolylmethyl ketone of the general formula (II) (synergist) R - CO - CH2 - Az (II) in which R is an organic radical and Az is an azole radical, or one of its acid addition salts, have a particularly high herbicidal activity. Characteristic examples of the photosynthesis-inhibiting active substances are metribuzin, ametridione, methabenzthiazuron, linuron and 4-amino-6-tert.-butyl-3-ethylthio-1,2,4-triazin-5-one.
