Prodn. of methane and other hydrocarbons by underground gasification of deep coal comprises (i) injecting a gasifying agent (contg. a large concn. of H2) at a pressure exceeding the min. fracturing pressure of the coal seam, into the seam through injection well(s) situated along the axis of the area to be exploited; and (ii) combusting the coal at the bottom of prodn. wells situated near the circumference of the area to be exploited. Zones of hydrogasification develop in the fissured zones round the prodn. wells, and propagate towards the injection wells, countercurrent to the H2 flow. As soon as increased methane prodn. is detected at a prodn. well, the initial injection of air to support combustion is stopped.
