PURPOSE:To measure the thickness of a solidified shell from the measured value of a billet temp. with good accuracy by plotting preliminarily the relation between the temp. change of the billet which is steadily drawn and the thickness change of the solidified shell to a graph. CONSTITUTION:Plural temp. detectors 5, 6, 7 are provided along the drawing direction of a billet 2 drawn from a mold. The temp. change of the billet 2 which is steadily drawn and the thickness (a) of a solidified shell A are measured and the relation between the temp. change of the billet 2 and the thickness change of the shell is preliminarily plotted to a graph. The surface temp. of the billet 2 which is continuously cast is measured with the detectors 5, 6, 7 and the thickness (a) of the solidified shell 2A is read from the above-described graph. The thickness (a) of the solidified shell is thus measured with good accuracy by a contactless method.
