A modularized crane (10) having a main frame (12), a winch frame (48) pinned at its front end to the main frame, links (52) pinned to the rear end supporting the winch frame above the main frame, an A-frame gantry (46) pinned to the winch frame, and a plurality of winches (28, 34, 36) supported on the winch frame. The gantry can be lowered by lowering the boom (18) to a substantially horizontal position and resting it on a support, relaxing the boom hoist suspension, removing the pins connecting the rear legs (56) of the gantry to the winch frame, securing the rear legs to the front legs of the gantry, attaching a snubbing line (82) to the gantry, tightening the boom hoist reeving to rotate the gantry forward, and relaxing the snubbing line to permit the gantry to rotate to its lowered position.
