The process simultaneously measures two components of the instantaneous flow velocity of a fluid by the optical barrier method. The optical barriers are two coplanar light crosses (a,b) whose centres (3a,3b) are situated at a set distance (4) from each other. Each cross (a,b) has one branch formed at a light line with a certain optical characteristic and another branch formed by another light line with another optical characteristic. The branches (1a,2a,1b,2b) of both crosses are parallel two by two so that the angle (2c) between both branches of a cross (a,b) is the same for both crosses. The time needed by suspended particles in the liquid to cover the distance between two parallel branches is measured for both pairs of branches.
