A plasma cutting device for metallic workpieces, e.g. pipes, bundles of tubes or sections, specially those made of chrome-nickel steels, uses a strap of ignition metal to transmit the plasma cutting arc between plasma torch and workpiece at the start. The ignition metal is tacked to the pipe and kept at workpiece potential. This facilitates the striking of a plasma cutting arc even when the torch distance exceeds the ignition distance, specially to start a tangential cut at one end of the pipe periphery.
