The invention relates to a process for spreading spreading material by a fertilizer spreader and to a suitable fertilizer spreader for carrying out the process, which has a spreading-material supply container and at least one jib-like spreading arm which distributes over the length of the spreading arm spreading material delivered from the supply container into the spreading arm and which feeds it to a spreading channel extending over the length of the spreading arm and having discharge slits, in front of which is arranged a spreading shaft which spreads the spreading material out of the discharge slits. The object on which the invention is based is, whilst ensuring a uniform discharge of the spreading material over the entire length of the spreading arm, to insure without any outlay in terms of construction that only as much spreading material as is necessary ever runs out of the supply container. According to the invention, excess spreading material accumulating in the region of the free end of the spreading arm and not spread out via the discharge slits by the spreading shaft is conveyed back via a return channel to that region of the spreading arm in which the delivery of the spreading material out of the supply container into the spreading arm takes place.
