Rotatable tensioners engage the tubular article of which an edge has to be sewn. The edge is detected by sensors which control the operation of aligners for adjusting the article edge to coincide with the stitch line of the sewing machine. Pref. the aligner comprises an annular array of gear wheels driven by a common worm. No operator skill is needed to hem long tubular garments, e.g. underskirts.
