The valve body (1) is provided with an inlet member (3) which carries the spool (13) for the coil (14). The valve head (9) is attached to the bolt (5) which slides in the central guide (4). The projections (15) secured by the screws (16) concentrate the magnetic field around the valve head. When the coil (14) is energised the valve head moves to the left and shuts off the air flow with the sealing washer (8). When the coil is de-energised the pressure difference across the valve head pushes the valve to the right and opens it without the need for any return spring. The valve operates at 20 times per second and heat is dissipated through the head extension (10) into the air flow.
