A method of separating materials having different specific weights, particularly suitable for separating out the impurities contained in the compost acquired from solid municipal refuse, the aforesaid raw compost being subjected to a separation of the impurities by kinetic energy differential of the compost and the impurities associated therewith, an air sifting and a subsequent separation by kinetic energy differential of the residual material still in the mixture. The device is formed from inclined plane surfaces, blowers and walls against which the materials for the abovementioned separation impact.
