The advance is fitted to a semi-automatic drag chain grinder having a work plate carrying a hydraulic piston to clamp the chain and an arm, carrying the grinder, which can be raised or lowered to allow passage of the chain. A double rod hydraulic cylinder (1) is mounted on the clamping assembly and is used to advance the chain, one rod being used to operate a pawl (10) with a pivoted arm (11). The other rod has forward and backward travel stops (4,5). The clamp has a magnetic type proximity detector (12) which emits a signal used to stop the chain advance hydraulic cylinder when a magnet on the chain is encountered. The magnet may indicate the end of the chain or a local defect.
