The arrangement consists of an electromagnetic clutch between the output of the engine and the accessory to be driven. To enhance safety, partic. in vehicles having a small engine, the clutch is automatically disengaged during acceleration of the vehicle, making full engine power available during acceleration. A switch (10) in the electric supply line to the clutch electromagnet is operated by a pressure gauge (9) which has a spring working against the engine vacuum derived from the inlet manifold. The high vacuum arising when the throttle is fully opened causes the switch to open, making full engine power available as the compressor load is removed. The arrangement may be used in conjunction with a Diesel of ful injection engine. Control may be effected through the use of relays acting on the alternator excitation.
