The appts. includes a housing, which supports an opaque probe tube (a). Tube (a) is closed at its free end by an opaque wall (b) which forms a cavity absorbing heat from a zone being monitored by the pyrometer. The cavity emits rays which travel along the bore of tube (a) to a photoelectric detector, which is connected to an electronic measuring circuit. Tube (a) and its end wall are pref. monolithic, or may consist of a tube (a) with its free end sealed by a plug contg. a hole which forms a radiant cavity. Tube (1) is pref. made of graphite contg. 2% porosity; a refractory metal; or an oxide with a plug (b) made of a refractory metal coated with alumina. The photoelectric detector is not exposed to corrosive fumes or dust present e.g. in a furnace in which the temp. is to be measured.
