Inexpensive mixt. for filling trenches or repairing roads - based on fly ash, which is mixed with small amts. of cement and activator, followed by adding water when mixt. is used
Mixt. is made contg. by wt. 85-94% of silico-aluminous fly ash, 6-12% cement, and 0.5-3% activator. The mixt. is then mixed with 30-60% of its wt. of water. The cement is pref. type 45 or type 55; whereas the activator is pref. sodium aluminate; anhydrous CaSO4; gypsum; gypsum obtd. from phosphates; or red mud. The sodium aluminate is pref. used as a 36% soln. in water. The mixt. may also contain conventional addns., esp. plasticisers, foamants entraining air, and fluidisers. After the wet mixt. has been used to fill a ditch or to repair a road, it is pref. allowed to set for min. 24 hrs., and then covered with a conventional road coating. The wet mixt. has a reasonable setting time, and does not crack or form fissures during setting; it also has a high wear-resistance.
