Therapeutic materials are obtd. from placentas by extn. and purificn. Throughout the process the amt. of active material is measured by a determn. of the increase effected in brain protein phosphorylation in the presence of radioactive 5'-adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The extn. is effected by placing human placentas in physiological saline and grinding. The mixt. is filtered and centrifuged and the supernatant liquid heated at 95 deg.C for 5 minutes, centrifuged, and the process repeated. The supernatant layer is frozen or lyophilised. Purificn. is effected by known methods such as preparative electrophoresis, liq. chromatography or membrane filtration. The prods. are useful in cosmetics, dermatology and gerontology, and in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
