The flowmeter contains a mobile screen (3) which extends over almost the entire width of the waterway and over part of the waterway's depth. The screen is mounted such that it has only one degree of freedom. The screen's position is due to the combined effects of its weight, a counterweight, the hydraulic forces and the connecting devices. The displacement of the screen according to its degree of freedom is a function of the flow rate only. The screen is formed by two plates (3A,3B) interconnected by an intermediate plate (3C). The shape of these plates (3A,3B) is such that the resultant of the hydraulic forces applied on them, excluding the intermediate part, is zero.
