The toothbrush has two cylindrical brushes parallel to each other and spaced to fit on either side of a tooth. A single electric motor drives both brushes through reduction gearing, and the direction of rotation of the motor is reversible. The electric motor (120) is fitted inside the toothbrush case (12) and has a gear (122) fitted to its output shaft. Two geared (123,125) shafts (128,127), parallel to the motor shaft, are driven in opposite directions by a gear train. The motor pinion (122) meshes with one of the gears (123) and this latter gear meshes with the gear (125) on the second shaft, thus giving opposite rotation to the two brushes (2) mounted on the shafts. The outside of the brushes is covered by a guard (3) to prevent contact with the inside of the mouth.
