The control system consists of variable gain input elements (101) connected to a main wide band amplifier (20) with a feedback path to adjust the output level against a reference. The input signal consists of a number of frequency multiplexed channels each with a variable gain element. The feedback path consists of the same number of parallel filters matched in bandwidth to the inputs. The buffered output (30) is sequentially switched to each filter which is fed into a comparator along with the reference level through a level detector. The comparator output is switched synchronously to a memory (39) having a time constant greater than the switch cycle time. The levels on the memories are fed as control signals to the variable gain elements.
