The automatic barrage in a river is controlled so that it pivots to lower with the necessary braking action. It is controlled to rise without braking action when a predetermined lower limit is achieved. The control system comprises a sensor (15) which indicates the upstream water level and stops rotation of a cable drum which manoeuvres the barrage. A unidirectional braking system (17) for the drum is driven via a controller (18). A second water level indicator (21) is activated when the barrage is above a particular level. The barrage drum is driven by a motor assembly (22) and hydraulic pump powered from accumulators (23) when the level sensors are activated. A solar panel (36) recharges the accumulators.
