Multi-electrode furnace, for electroslag remelting of metals - where L=shaped electrode holders can be swivelled on vertical axes to adjust horizontal position of electrodes in mould
The furnace includes a vertical pillars fitted with lower slides used to lift the mould off the mould base as casting proceeds; and each pillar carries a second, upper slide, employed to drive a jib vertically to lower one consumable electrode into the mould. Each jib has a wedge groove contg. shoes which clamp the vertical part of an electrode holder. When the shoes are loosened, part can be swivelled on its vertical axis to alter the position of the electrode in the mould; and part has a horizontal arm via which the electrode is suspended on electric contacts. The advantage is that the horizontal position of the electrodes can be varied to suit the horizontal cross-section of the mould. Three vertical pillars (2) are each fitted with an upper slide (13) and motor (14), which move jib (3) vertically along pillar (2). Each jib (3) has a wedge groove (15), contg. shoes (18) which anchor the head (17) of part (16) of electrode holder (4). On each part (16) is a horizontal arm (19) with inclined sides (21) making good electric contact with hole (22) in the shank (23) of electrode (5). Peg (25) and lever (24) hold shank (23) on arm (19).
