The technique combats the wandering of a major river in or semi arid countries, is partic applicable at a bridge site, and uses deflectors in the form of vertical slabs of which a substantial proportion lies below bed level. Deflectors are sited at longitudinal intervals immediately inside the flood banks at likely erosion sites e.g. bends, and are obliquely orientated to the flow to deflect the current inwards. The top edge of the slabs is sited above max flood level, and deflectors may have a rectangular or a 'T' shape in plan. Alternative forms may be founded on completely buried piles or shafts, and adjacent deflectors may be connected by a capping beam.
