The roller has a two position steering column (12) which when vertical is suitable for a person seated on the machine and when tilted forward and down is suitable for an operator walking along with the machine. In the lower position gears in the steering box are re-meshed so that the direction of the steering is reversed. This gives the correct directional responce of the steering mechanism in each position. A safety feature in the form of a spring loaded wheel is mounted below the main steering wheel capable of being pulled up by the grip of one hand. Only when this spring loaded device is actuated is it possible to start the machine in motion using the control lever (11).
