During the frequency-controlled braking of a three-phase motor (3) which is supplied from a converter having a DC intermediate circuit (10), preferably a pulse-controlled AC converter (2), it is intended to convert the existing braking energy into heat without additional braking devices in the heavy-current section in the motor. To this end, the frequency of the converter is increased as a consequence of a defined elevated intermediate-circuit voltage during braking until the intermediate-circuit voltage is reduced.
