To guide the traffic of vehicles (10) safely on a roadway (8) in accordance with the principle of the Green Wave independently of weather conditions and with the least possible outlay of stationary equipment, signal transmitters (5, 6) are arranged only at discrete points along the roadway (8), which signal transmitters receive signals from a centralised stationary computing unit (9) with respect to their setting in the green-phase area of the progressive Green Wave and the speed of propagation of this wave; these signals are transmitted to a vehicle-internal computing unit (12) which is also continuously supplied with information with regard to the instantaneous vehicle speed and which supply information with regard to the respective vehicle position in the Green Wave and any speed difference between Green Wave and vehicle to a vehicle-internal signalling device (14) for the driver within the roadway area (7) between successive signal transmitters (5, 6).
