In billing private consumers of energy, in particular electrical energy, the consumers should be encouraged by means of the tariff structure to avoid consumer peaks and to draw the energy as uniformly as possible instead. The usual maximum tariff for large consumers is, however, too disadvantageous in cost terms for small consumers. For this reason, according to the invention, a tariff device (1) is proposed, to the input of which a train of pulses (I) is fed with a frequency proportional to the power. The tariff device (1) has a pulse counter (3) for the pulses of the pulse train (I) and also a measuring cycle generator (4) which always resets the pulse counter (3) at the end of a measuring cycle. The pulse counter (3) feeds an exponent generator (6) which supplies the n-th power of the number of pulses received by the pulse counter (3) during a measuring cycle at the output, n being 1. This n-th power of the number of pulses is always additively combined at the end of each measuring cycle with the value run up hitherto in a cumulating counter (7). The value obtained from the cumulating counter at the end of a measuring cycle depends not only on the amount of energy drawn but also on the irregularity of the withdrawal and is therefore a reasonable measure for tariff structuring.
