The invention relates to an improved process for producing dense sintered alumina or dense modified sintered alumina or alumina ceramic materials, hydrargillite being used as the starting material, which is predried if necessary, the water content of the hydrargillite being adjusted to very specific values between 3 and 12 % by weight by addition of an aluminium hydroxide gel and, if necessary, water, and the preparation of the pressed bodies being followed by a heat treatment under controlled heating-up rates of 5 to 30 DEG C/hour in the case of relatively large pressed bodies and of 30 to 65 DEG C/hour in the case of relatively small pressed bodies in the temperature range from 180 DEG C to 475 DEG C, before they are fired at temperatures above 1650 DEG C.
