In such methods use is made of longitudinal canal construction apparatuses whose lining rate exceeds that of transverse placing apparatuses. Since, however, only relatively small slope inclinations can be worked using longitudinal placing apparatuses, the transverse method of placing linings is superior in this regard to the longitudinal placing method. In order also to be able to employ the longitudinal placing method, with its high placing rates, to work relatively large slope inclinations, it is proposed to perform the levelling and/or the distribution, compaction and smoothing of the lining material at at least one of the slope surfaces (9a, 9b), continuously in each case on a slope line (24), which lies in an angular range ( alpha ) of approximately 15 to 45 DEG to the horizontal (23), the associated angle of slope ( beta ) being perpendicular to the parallel to the longitudinal axis of the canal in the angular range from approximately 20 DEG to 60 DEG to the horizontal (23'). The longitudinal canal construction apparatus for carrying out this method is configured for this purpose in such a way that at least two rigs (1, 2) with their equipment items (13, 19a; 14, 19b) are arranged sequentially spaced apart in the longitudinal canal direction (28) on the slope line (24) rising obliquely upwards from below, and extending parallel to one another on the straight line.
