ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREMethod and apparatus for producing cellulosic pulp bythe thermo-mechanical pulping method wherein wood chips arecontacted with gaseous steam at a temperature and for a timesufficient to bring the temperature of the chips close tothat of the steam, compacting the resulting steam treatedchips while mechanically conveying the same to reduce themoisture content and produce a compacted moist mass, shred-ding the compacted mass while further conveying the sameunder more severe conditions than the original conveyingand then passing the shredded mass into a refiner.The apparatus of the present invention preferablytakes the form of a pair of coaxially operating worm typeconveyors with the end of one conveyor being journalled inthe end of the other, and operating under conditions suchthat the second conveyor tends to pull the compacted massfaster than it is being delivered and thereby provides ashredding action to maintain a fairly uniform input intothe refiner stage.
