A baby's dummy made of a non-toxic elastomer such as food-grade PVC or natural rubber has a hollow teat (12) contg. a capsule (26) filled with a liq. crystal material (28) which changes colour at 37.8 deg. C. The capsule walls are pref. a gelatinous material, partic. a vitamin based glycerine/gelatin substance, and the capsule is suspended in glycerine (30) which fills the teat (12) and does not attack the material from which it is made. The interior of the teat is sealed by a plug (32) of the same material as the rest of the dummy, pref. food-grade PVC. The plug is introduced as a PVC solvent cement which is hardened by evaporation of the solvent. The dummy provides a method of monitoring the health of a baby, the incorporated liq. crustal changing colour when the child is feverish.
