Photoelectrochemical cell comprises a container; an anode mounted in the container, made from a photosensitive n-type semiconductor material; a window in the container through which diffuse or concentrated (sun)light can pass to impinge upon the anode; an aq. electrolyte in which the anode is situated; a cathode comprising a hydride-forming metal or metal alloy; and a layer of material sepg. the cathode from the electrolyte and made from a material which is a rapid conductor of protons, has a negligible electron conductivity and is stable w.r.t water. The electrolyte is e.g. of acid-reacting material, esp. H3PO4 and the proton-conducting material is e.g. hydrogen uranyl phosphate tetrahydrate (I). The cathode may make up part of a rocking-chair cell and may also be a component in a fuel cell. By sepg the cathode from the electrolyte, the cathode can be made from a wider variety of materials. The cells are useful for conversion of (sun)light into usable energy, for electrolysis of water to H2+O2, for electrolysis of H2S to H2 and sulphur, and for electrolytic oxidn. of (waste) organic materials (alcohols, aldehydes, carboxylic acid, cellulosic materials, (poly)saccharides, starch, etc) in aq. effluent streams.
