ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREFinely divided particulate solids are removedfrom unconventional whole heavy petroleum crudes, heavypetroleum crude fractions, and residua, syncrudes andsyncrude fractions, particularly shale oil and shale oilfractions, by the use of novel surface active agentscharacterized as an admixture of (I) a surfactant com-prised of (A) an ethoxylated or propoxylated ester, orester constituted or a 1,4-sorbitan skeleton to whichat least one and up to three ethoxy, propoxy, or mixedethoxy-propoxy, and at least one and up to three fattyacid substituents are attached through oxygen to the2,3,5 and 6 carbon atoms; and preferably this compound(A), or mixture thereof, is further admixed with (B) anorgano sulfonic acid and more preferably (I) is admixedwith (II) a demulsifier which is characterized as anethoxylated, propoxylated, or mixed ethoxylated/pro-poxylated phenol formaldehyde resin substituted at aposition para to said ethoxy and/or propoxy group, orgroups, with a hydrocarbyl group.
