PURPOSE:To prevent the production of impossible commutation by operating a motor with the gain of gain varying means at the prescribed value when the motor speed is within the prescribed value and lowering the gain when the motor speed is higher than the prescribed value, thereby stopping the PWM operation. CONSTITUTION:An AC motor 9 is driven by an inverter 8, and a PWM operation is performed based on the oscillating operation of an angle regulating loop including an inverter 8, a magnetic flux arithmetic unit 12, a speed regulator 14, a torque current regulator 16 and an angle arithmetic unit 17. A gain varying circuit 15 is inserted to the front stage of a torque current regulator 16 at this time, the gain of the entire loop is regulated by the value of the detecting speed n, the gain is set to the prescribed value when the speed is within the prescribed value, and the gain is lowered when te speed is higher than the prescribed value. Accordingly, the PWM operation can be stopped in the range causing a defect in the commutating operation due to the rise in the speed, thereby smoothly operating at from low to high speed.
