PURPOSE:To improve the yield of products and to obtain copper-based metals of high purity by using powder and granular copper oxide as an oxidation-reduction agent for copper-based metallic scraps contg. impurities. CONSTITUTION:Scraps such as turnings of copper or copper alloys stuck with cutting oils or the like produced in machining, cutting, etc. are melted in a furnace, and copper oxide which is melted by heating is added at a suitable amt. into the molten liquid thereof under agitation, whereby these are melted. The oxygen liberated from the copper oxide and the carbon and hydrogen in impurities are bound and released as CO2 and H2O. The other impurities are removed as slag, after which the molten liquid is cooled, whereby the reproduced copper or copper alloy of high purity is obtained. If SiO2 is contained as an impurity, the SiC of a high melting temp. is converted to CO2 and SiO2 by the oxygen liberated from the copper oxide and the melted SiO2 is removed as slag together with the other impurities.
