A container for a liq. which is intended for drinking, partic. a cask in which wine, whisky etc. is held for a period of a ageing and maturing. The process which takes place during this period relies upon chemical reaction, over a number of years, between the liq. and the contacted surface of wood which forms the cask and/or is contained within the cask. The wood is usually oak, which may be carbonised. The container takes the form of a wooden, partic. oak, cask or barrel inside which is fitted a renewable contacting element made of wood, pref. oak. The element is designed to present max. surface area for the space which it takes up. To this end the element is pocketed with open chambers e.g. in the form of a honeycomb or egg-box. The cask is used for the storage of wines, whiskies etc. during a period of ageing and maturing. The duration of this maturing period is reduced by insertion of the contacting element.
