The trailer carries a loading bucket with articulating arms (19,21) the power (23) for both being hydraulic and is contained on the trailer unit. The vehicle can reverse, pushing the trailer and the bucket into the pile of material to be lifted so that the ground beneath the pile is left flat and clean. The lifting arms then transfer the material into the vehicle and there is sufficient play in the movement so that the material is spread into a zone sufficiently large to allow a good distribution of material in the vehicle.
