The system is ised for marking the position of a projectile fired in exercises and includes use of a small transmitter mounted in the projectile. The VHF transmitter provides a power of about 0.1 W and is powered by a mercury battery which lasts for 2 - 3 mins. The emitter is turned on at the launch of the projectile, but the transmission does not start until after a chosen delay time. The transmitter operates in Al mode at a frequency between 30 and 40 MHz,withoutmodulationofthecarrierwave. A quartz oscillator (13) controls the oscillation frequency with a stability of one ppm. The oscillator is connected via an impedance matching circuit (14) to an aerial (15) formed by a line of conductive silver paint, or strip of self-adhesive aluminium. Two stations on the ground monitor the transmission from the projectile, in order to locate its position.
