A method of disintegrating a coal mass in coal mines consists of drilling holes in the mass and introducing into the holes a disintegrating soln. The disintegrating soln. is constituted by a soln. of alcohols, phenols, aldehydes, ketones organic sulphur cpds., ammonia and bases or their mixts. The physico-chemical action of the soln. causes the coal structure to loosen and discharges the stresses in the mass. The method considerably improves the safety of working, partic. in mines where there is a great risk of violent and uncontrollable discharges. The amt. of work required and the consumption of energy are less than in using existing methods of breaking down the coal.
