The femoral stem (1) is for an artificial hip joint, and has an upper head (1b) fitting in a spherical socket (C). A support plate (1a) bears against the top face (F2) of the femur (F), which has been cut off at the neck, and an implantation shaft (1c) is fitted into the medullary canal (F1) of the femur. The head, plate and stem are made of a single solid forging. From the lower end to the level of the elbow (1d) connecting it to the plate, the stem has a lengthwise slot, ending at a wider opening (1f). This makes the stem elastic, expanding in the medullary canal so as to anchor it without the use of any sealing agent.
