Plant is described for the continuous prodn. of methane by fermentation of organic waste such as manure and stable litter. The installation is of the type which comprises an open vessel in which an aerobic prefermentation of the waste is effected. The waste is advanced into a closed vessel for a period of anaerobic fermentation. One of the vessels is now enclosed within the other so that heat is easily transferred from the aerobic fermentation vessel to the anaerobic fermentation vessel. Pref. the aerobic vessel is located inside the anaerobic vessel. Pref. the aerobic vessel is located inside the anaerobic vessel. Pref. the aerobic fermentation vessel is sepd. from the fermenting material in the anaerobic vessel by a space filled with air and/or water. The anaerobic vessel is pref. subdivided into a number of compartments which communicate in series. A first compartment has an inlet to receive fermenting material from the aerobic vessel. The final compartment has an outlet through which waste can be discharged or partly recycled. The installation is designed for the prodn. of methane from organic waste by fermentation, partic. from manure etc. By splitting the anaerobic vessel into several compartments, a controlled, higher rate of fermentation is achieved. At the same time, maximum advantage is taken of heat available in the aerobic prefermentation.
