The system has two almost vertical mountings (3) on the chair support (2) platform. Each has at its top a double roller (9) forming the webs of a C-shaped section (10) opening downwards and receiving the top of the mounting. At the bottom is another roller (7) engaging in another profile (8), parallel to the first, and also of C section but with the opening facing inwards. Inside each profile is a chain meshing with pinions at the top of each mounting, at least one being driven to move the wheelchair up or down the steps.
