Differential numeric coding with automatic code switching is especially for pulse code modulated signal streams. The system is compatible with both adaptive differential and classic PCM coding. A predicted error signal, with or without amplitude compression, is quantified and provides a transmit code word. The quantification process consists of real and level quantification following compression of levels controlled by a signal which is a function of a mean level. The absolute value of the error signal is coded as a second word in the signal and is transmitted when the first code word has a value indicating that the algebraic predicted error is a maximum or minimum. A predictor circuit, to the Nth order, transmits the coded signal during N sampling periods.
