An anion exchange adsorbent consisting of structured chemisorption fibres based on C chain polymers contg. vinyl pyridine- or aliphatic amine gps. is used for purifying gases contg. HCl and/or HF as contaminants. The adsorbent is then regenerated with water. The fibres are pref. derived from e.g. a copolymer contg. 50-80 wt.% acrylonitrile and 50-20 wt.% 2-vinyl-pyridine, 4-vinyl-pyridine or 2-Me-5-vinyl-pyridine. Degree of gas purifcn. is 99%, independently of initial concn. Process can take place at 30-100% humidity, and =60 degrees C. No. of sorption/regeneration cycles is unlimited. The filters are regenerated cheapy to form hydrogen halide solns. which can be utilised. The filters can have low aerodynamic resistance combined with high efficiency/vol. and can be used in ventilation systems without reducing the air stream.
