Sepn. comprises irradiating a uranyl cpd. (I) at 810-1116 cm-1 so as to produce a selectively excited constituent of (I), enriched in one isotope, and then sepg. this enriched constituent. (I) contains =2 isotopes and is present in the vapour phase at a vapour pressure of =0.1 Torr. Pref. (I) is irradiated with a CO2 laser at 200 (esp. 130) degrees C. The sepd. enriched component is pref. converted to a separable prod. by irradiation with visible or UV light (esp. from a second laser) or by using an IR laser. Pref. (I) are the new cpds. of formula UO2 (hfacac)2L (where hfacac is hexafluoroacetylacetone and L is a ligand, esp. THF). (I) can be evaporated as a stable monomer, has suitable vapour pressure at low temp. and has no IR absorption which can interfere with the UO2+ excitation. Selective excitation of U235 or U238 is possible.
