The perlite is expanded by heat, and is then cooled. While the perlite is still above 130 deg.C, it is sprayed by a mixt. (I) of water and silicones so the grains are made hydrophobic. The grains are next subjected to further cooling and, while they are between 50 deg.C and room temp., they are sprayed with another mixt. (II) of water and silicones; mixt. (II) is used to bond the dust particles in the perlite. Mixt. (II) pref. contains 5-20, esp. 10-15% of silicones; and both mixts. are pref. applied to streams of bulk perlite. Mixt. (II) is pref. used as a finely-dispersed spray flowing in counter-current to the perlite. Mixt. (II) may also contain a non-flammable pigment which colours the perlite grains. The perlite has many applications, e.g. heat or sound insulation, or for the absorption of oil. Dust in perlite is usually bonded with satd. aliphatic hydrocarbons, but the latter cannot be used in some cases and the invention provides mixt. (II) as an alternative.
